SPECIAL OCCASIONS: Christmas

It's starting to feel a lot like Christmas
29 November 2018

It's that time of year where festive cheer abounds - schools are about to close, streets and shopping malls are abuzz with lights, decorations and Christmas carols, and our calendars are filled with social activities to celebrate the upcoming holidays.

Even though Christmas is a religious holiday, popular Christmas traditions have been widely adopted and many join in the festive holiday celebrations. Traditions like Father Christmas, gift-giving, decorations, hanging wreaths and putting up the Christmas tree bring people together and help them get into the festive spirit. But haven’t you ever wondered why we do some of the things we do at Christmas time, or how these traditions originated? Keep reading to find out a bit more.

Christmas Trees

The tradition of putting up a Christmas tree and decorating it dates back to German celebrations of Christmas thousands of years ago. Many believed evergreen trees kept away witches and evil spirits, so they used the evergreen tree to symbolize life and hope. Now that you know a little about the history of the Christmas tree, the ever-debated question of “When is the right time to put up and decorate your Christmas tree?” is asked year and again.

While there is no right answer, and the right time is largely dependent on whether you’re a real or artificial Christmas tree kind of person, the 1st of December is increasingly seen as the best time to decorate the tree. Traditionalist however, feel the right time is 12 days before Christmas. For people who love real Christmas trees and parents with small children, they may be onto something here - maintain the momentum of the kids excitement in the build up to the Christmas and ensure more pine needles are still on the Christmas tree when you sit down to your Christmas meal.

Father Christmas and Gift Giving

The idea of Father Christmas was created in the 1800s and is based on Saint Nicholas, an early Christian bishop of an ancient Greek city, with a legendary habit of secret gift-giving. He was thought to have been a protector of the poor and the story goes that he threw three pouches of gold coins through a window and apparently one of them landed in a stocking. It was then that children started hanging stockings too, in the hope they’d receive gifts too.

Today, Father Christmas makes countless toys in the North Pole with his elves and delivers them via reindeer to all the children who have been nice throughout the year :)

Gift giving isn’t just for Father Christmas though. The exchange of gifts stems from the three kings gifting baby Jesus with Frankincense, Gold and Myrrh. Today families and friends exchange a wide range gifts to celebrate this magical time of year.

Festive Wreaths as Decorations

The wreath's origin dates back to both the ancient Pagans, when they stored the evergreen branches throughout the frozen winters as they were the only leaves to survive and also from the Romans, who gave evergreen tree branches as gifts at New Year to wish people lasting health and happiness. Nowadays, wreaths have become traditional household decor and are typically hung on doors to welcome visitors. Wreaths also double up as bold table centrepieces, making family gatherings at meal times more festive.

The beauty of wreaths is that they are round, symbolising the unending cycle of life as well as growth. Personally, we love them as they represent the coming together of people and family, in celebration.

Christmas traditions make the Bloomable team extremely happy, because it’s something we’re particularly passionate about - it’s the time of giving and sharing and love, after all.
