You will find Bainskloof Pass running from Paarl to Ceres, through the Witte River and over the Limietberge. This 30km long road is famous as being one of the most beautiful in South Africa.
A man who didn’t even have engineering training built it in 1853. His name was Andrew Geddes Bain, hence the name Bainskloof. He is also responsible for the development of many more passes in the Western Cape.
The landscape surrounding Bainskloof is generally unspoiled and filled with fynbos, wildflowers. Travellers will find themselves at a rare wine farm, or guesthouse a long the way but generally it’s a stretch of road filled with natural beauty. Look out for the most famous landmark in the pass: Dacre’s pulpit. It’s a rock that has formed as an overhang, which was not destroyed during the development of the pass.
