Benoni is a city of 150,000 residents located just to the east of bustling Johannesburg, South Africa. Though once a major mining center, today Benoni is less well-known for gold mining than for being the birthplace of actress Charlize Theron. Benoni is also famous for being home to South Africa's first race horses, imported from England in 1907. This legacy is still visible today in the outsized number of horse stables within Benoni.

Benoni is home to the Benoni Museum, which hosts educational exhibits about the city's role in a miners' revolt in 1922. Children may prefer an afternoon picnicking at Bunny Park, where rabbits roam free and are tame enough to be handled. The park has a playground and several farm animals such as cows, goats, and chickens.

In addition to many great restaurants and pubs, Benoni also features excellent shopping at the Lakeside Shopping Mall. This unique retail area is centered around a mall built to look like an old-fashioned Mississippi steamboat by the edge of the lake. There are also cobblestone streets and replicas of New Orleans French Quarter manors. For children, there's also Mardi Gras, an indoor play area and arcade.
