Bronkhorstspruit is a very small town in Gauteng, on the border of the Mpumalanga province. With a population of just over 3,500 residents, it is notable that Bronkhorstspruit is home to the largest Buddhist temple in Africa. The Nan Hua Temple is located in the Cultura Park area of Bronkhorstspruit, just south of the N4. Though constructed in the 1990s, the temple boasts the classic look of temples found in Thailand, where this order of Buddhist monks originated. The colourful, tiled gateway with statues of the Buddha and golden characters is not to be missed. The temple also offers quiet meditation retreats to get away from the bustle of Johannesburg and Pretoria to the west.
Another restful place in tiny Bronkhorstspruit is the Anton Smit Sculpture Park, an outdoor museum featuring both classical and modern sculpture in a picturesque garden setting. For a coffee break after exploring the park, the Imagine Cafe offers a lovely rest stop for food and drink.
For nature lovers, there's also the Ezemvelo Nature Reserve, which offers hiking trails along the scenic Wilge River. It's possible to spend just a day or stay overnight at the onsite chalets for guests looking for wildlife.
