Ermelo lies in the north eastern portion of South Africa and is the cultural centre of Mpumalanga province.
The city of Ermelo was named for a town in the Netherlands by its founder, Frans Lion Cachet, a Dutch minister and evangelist. Before the Dutch arrived in the area, the region was home to the Leghoya people, who left behind mysterious ruins of the ancient settlements that can still be viewed today. Though all but just one house was destroyed by the British during the Second Boer War, today Ermelo is a thriving community of over 80,000 residents.
Ermelo has cosy neighbourhoods, parks and even an airfield to make travel to other parts of South Africa more convenient. Locals also enjoy the scenic Ermelo Country Club for a round of golf that features peaceful water views.
There are many places to get a bite to eat in Ermelo, including the Madness Art Cafe, a favourite with locals thanks to its creative menu and friendly service. Apache Peak Spur has great barbecue, burgers and desserts, while Panarottis Express serves up delicious pizzas and rich desserts in a clean and inviting location. Picnique Bistro is another choice for a quick bite.
