Howick is in the province of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa.
Howick is a mid-sized town that sits over 1000 metres above sea level and nearly 100 kilometres from Durban, the nearest major city. The town is known for a stark and thick mist that falls over the area in a massive hanging cloud in summer mornings and evenings, but it also enjoys the warm, tropical-like summer days like its nearest city, Durban.
Howick Falls is a big waterfall that runs off of the Umgeni River and falls for nearly 100 metres, eventually entering the warm Indian Ocean. Howick Falls is by far the most popular waterfall in the area, but the tallest waterfall is actually Karkloof Falls that falls for 105 metres and is only 16 kilometres outside of Howick’s centre.
Howick is probably best known as the location where Nelson Mandela was arrested during August in 1962, and if visitors aren’t pouring into the area for the Howick Falls or to visit family, then to catch up on this cultural history is the likely reason.
