Johannesburg is the capital of Gauteng province and is South Africa's largest city.

Though the official population of Johannesburg itself is just under 100,000, the greater metropolitan area is one of the largest in the world with almost 4.5 million people. Though originally inhabited by nomadic San and Sotho-Tswana farmers, the Dutch Voortrekkers claimed the land in the 1830s and began mining for gold shortly thereafter. Today Johannesburg and its surrounds is an area of great cultural and linguistic diversity.

Highlighting this diversity is the Apartheid Museum, a popular place to reflect on South Africa's past and gaze into its more hopeful, equitable future. Also of interest to history buffs is the peaceful Satyagraha House, where visitors can learn about Gandhi's time in South Africa.
