Kempton Park, a city on the East Rand in the Gauteng province is situated north-east of Johannesburg, the largest city in South Africa, and is home to O.R. Tambo International Airport, the continent’s busiest.

Kempton Park was formed in 1903 when part of the Zuurfontein farm was sub-divided into residential plots, with the owner naming the new town Kempten after the Bavarian town of his birth.  This was later anglicised to Kempton Park.

Given the proximity to the airport, it is no surprise that much of the economic activity is centred on air-transit related industries. South African Airways, the national carrier, have their headquarters in Kempton Park and many other airlines are in close proximity, including South African Express Airways, Airlink, Mango, Comair, Safair and Kulula.com.

The large township, Tembisa, can be found to north of the city.

Entertainment aplenty can be found at the Emperor’s Palace Casino, which includes a hotel, restaurants, casino, and convention and exhibition centre.

The Kempton Park Golf Course, situated in the city’s Spartan suburb, is known as the club where the internationally renowned golfer, Ernie Els, first learned to swing a golf club. Ernie went on to win both the US Open and British Open twice each and has won a further 43 titles across the PGA and European Tours.
