Situated in the heart of the bushveld on the southern edge of the Waterberg Massif in the Limpopo Province, is the town of Modimolle.
Modimolle was formerly known as Nylstroom, after the The Nyl River, which flows near the town. This North-flowing river was called ‘The Nile’ by the Jerusalem pilgrims, who thought that they had reached Egypt while on their journey to the North.
Surrounded by hot mineral springs, lush green scenery, nature reserves and game farms, Modimolle boasts an abundance of natural beauty. The area specialises in growing delicious table grapes, which are available at the beginning of December. Visitors can also treat themselves to the juicy fruit and crunchy fresh vegetables on offer at the farmers' market throughout the year.
Outdoor activities include fishing for carp, bream, black bass and barbel on the Donkerpoort Dam, 11km northwest of the town. Pay a visit to the Nylsvlei Bird and Nature Reserve, located between Phagameng and Mookgopong, which is the largest and most well conserved flood plain in South Africa.
