Mookgopong is an historic town at the foot of the Swaershoek Mountains in the Limpopo Province in the Waterberg District. It was formerly known as Naboomspruit.
Mookgopong is surrounded by beautiful nature reserves, unique Bushveld flora and hot springs. The area boasts hiking trails, resorts and a pleasant climate that attract visitors all year round.
Mookgopong owes its origins to the late 1800s when it was a rest station for the Pretoria-Polokwane mail coach. The little village sprung up around the railway station on the farm Naboomspruit, but it was largely thanks to the discovery of minerals in the area the early 1900s that Mookgopong really took off. The discovery of tin led to a ‘tin rush’ in 1910 and then later platinum, which allowed the little town to flourish and saw a host of lively restaurants, cabarets and shops pop up. Tin and fluorspar are still mined in Mookgopong today.
Attractions in the area include the Waterberg Biosphere Reserve, situated in the magnificent Waterberg Mountain Range. It features breathtaking rock formations that were shaped over hundreds of millions of years by riverine erosion.
Also popular is the Hanglipberg Trail boasting incredible views. The 40-kilometre Serendipity Eco Trail is actually a collection of three 4x4 trails that can be linked together or enjoyed separately. Drivers can look forward to grassy savannahs, valleys and gorges as well as a rich variety of game and birdlife.
