Paarl is a city in the southern part of Western Cape province.
Paarl gets its name from the Dutch word for "pearl," an apt moniker for this lovely gem of a city. Founded in 1657 by members of the Dutch East India Company, Paarl is the oldest European settlement in the country, though the area was inhabited by the Khoikhoi, San and Cochoqua peoples before the arrival of the Dutch.
Paarl is a prosperous city and popular stop on the Wine Route. Visitors to the area can tour vineyards and taste local wines at local spots like Mellasat Vineyards and Nederburg Wines. For other outdoor activities, the Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve offers hiking, wildlife watching and views of the famous geological landmark that the Dutch named for a pearl. There's also a modern stone wonder in the form of the Afrikaans Language Monument, an architectural wonder and great place to learn about local culture.
It's no surprise that a city as devoted to wine as Paarl has great places to eat as well. For the ultimate in fine dining, Terra Mare offers classic bistro fare. Another great choice is Noop, which features a modern fusion menu and creative, international dishes.
