Port Alfred is situated in the Eastern Cape in the middle of the sunshine coast at the mouth of the Kowie Rover. It is a picturesque little town with long stretches of beach, a marina and all the charm of a small seaside village
Port Alfred was established by the 1820 British Settlers, who were moved to the area as a buffer between the Cape Colony and the Xhosa people. The town was originally called Port Frances, but was renamed after Queen Victoria’s son, Prince Alfred, who visited there in 1860.
Today, Port Alfred attracts throngs of holidaymakers who come to make the most of the temperate climate, warm waters of the Indian Ocean and myriad outdoor activities on offer. The area is a playground for water sport enthusiasts, offering great diving spots off the reef, canoeing on the Kowie, water-skiing, whale watching and kitesurfing. Port Alfred also has wonderful swimming and walking beaches with over 1800 different types of seashells having been identified.
For those who prefer to be on dry land, the area boasts top game reserves including Shamwari and is known as a ‘Big Eight' destination, where you could see lions, leopards, rhinos, buffalos, elephants, dolphins, sharks and whales.
