Randfontein, established in 1890 to serve a new mine, is now a town in western Guateng, South Africa, known for its mining of gold.
JB Robinson, a mining entrepreneur, helped found Randfontein when he bought the farm, Randfontein, and proceeded to float the Randfontein Estates Gold Mining Company. In 2011, the population was recorded to be nearly 150 000 people, including the areas of Mohlakeng and Toekomsrus, covering an area of 475 square kilometres.
Randfontein can boast the biggest stamp mill in the whole world (which was used when paper making was still in its infancy to prepare the pulp). However, despite this, there is not much rich heritage about the rural collection of farms and small holdings. For visitors interest, the Krugersdorp Game Reserve, is the largest near attraction, offering many intriguing wildlife sightings of hippo, giraffe, white rhino, buffalo and antelope. There is also a Rhino Park near Kromdraai made of cascading hills and grasslands that is improving the white rhino population and acts as a home to many hippos, wildebeest and birds.
