Richards Bay is a mid-sized town in the province of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa, being the location of one of the country’s biggest harbours.
The coastal harbour town was founded in 1879 by Sir Frederick Richards, Commodore of the Cape at the time, as an aid harbour during the Anglo-Zulu War. In the mid-twentieth century, the South African government began to put measures into place to protect the 30 square kilometre lagoon that the town is based on, creating the Richards Bay Game Sanctuary and the Richards Bay Park. In the latter half of the twentieth century, the town’s harbour was altered to become a deep water harbour and an oil pipeline was installed linking it to Johannesburg.
Sitting nearly at the halfway point between Durban and Kosi Bay, Richard Bay is a tourist gateway into both Zululand and Maputaland, gathering attention from both sides of South Africa as well as international visitors. Tourists to the town can enjoy a number of activities, including bathing, beaches, birding, harbour tours, game drives, hikes, surfing and canoeing.
