The Bluff is a region of large sand dunes that protect the port of Durban from the open Indian Ocean.
The Bluff contains several suburbs of Durban on its length, all of which enjoy lovely ocean views and a gorgeous climate year-round. Though today the area is largely residential, in the past it has been an important military landmark and was once the home of a whaling station.
Brighton Beach is the most popular tourist area on The Bluff, and each year it hosts thousands of visitors looking for fun in the sun and surf. The Cooper Lighthouse is a major landmark here; it can be viewed at a distance for free or up close by appointment. Brighton Beach is fun for families and surfers alike. Surfers also enjoy the waves at nearby Cave Rock, which is considered one of the finest surfing locations in South Africa.
There are many great restaurants to enjoy on The Bluff. It should come as no surprise that this seaside area has excellent seafood on offer, and John Dory's Bluff Towers is a great choice for those looking for fresh fish and sushi dishes. Other great dinner spots include the Chicken Shack and the Green Dolphin.
