Vanderbijlpark is relatively new community in the southern part of Gauteng province.
Vanderbijlpark was founded in 1949 as a residential area for the workers at Vanderbijlpark Steel. It is named for the first overseer of the steel plant, an electrical engineer named Hendrik van der Bijl. Today Vanderbijlpark is home to 95,000 people.
Vanderbijlpark's location on the Vaal River offers many excellent outdoor activities, including hiking along the river banks and cruising the river on the Liquid Lounge, a riverboat offering cocktail and lovely sunset views. For great family fun, the Emerald Animal World is a branch of the National Zoological Gardens of South Africa that showcases over 600 animals and birds for all to see. Afterwards, there are many entertainment options at the Emerald Casino, including live music, gambling and excellent restaurants.
One favorite stop at the Emerald Casino is Breeze, where weekends see a variety of musical acts to enjoy during dinner. For a quieter experience, come during breakfast for a great cappuccino. Another fun spot to spend and evening is Chicago's Piano Bar, a 1920s themed restaurant with a speakeasy sensibility. Fancy dress theme nights add to the fun!
